Happy New Year 2021! Good Riddance 2020!

Good-bye and Good Riddance 2020 . . . Hello 2021

Sunrise, December 31, 2020

Wow! What a year! Like all of you, we are saying “Good-bye, Good Riddance 2020” and looking forward to a brighter, happier, healthier 2021.

Once again, we are bringing in the new year in our little favorite cottage at the Albion River Inn in Mendocino, albeit, a very different experience than in the past 25 years of us coming up here to celebrate New Year's together. Usually a food-centric weekend dining at our favorite restaurants, we are now supporting them by bringing back take-out and eating by the fire and the sound of the ocean waves. There will be no browsing in the little stores in the village, but in between rainstorms, we plan on taking long hikes on the coastal trails.

Having not followed my friends into retirement yet, this has been a bittersweet year. I love a good challenge, or I wouldn’t have ever become a school principal. I love solving problems, working with teachers, students, and their parents, and seeing the results with each passing day. The problems presented to all of us in education have obviously been unprecedented ('Unprecedented' named People's Choice 2020 Word of the Year by Dictionary.com”). Problem-solving became an understatement this year. I’m glad I was able to bring my almost 20 years of experience at Heather School to support the efforts, but WOW! It has been hard, and not all that fun. I am so looking forward to next year with whatever a new normal might look like. My twin granddaughters, Siena and Gemma, will be in kindergarten, my goal post, before retiring, to enjoy a year with them at my school (in-person, not virtual) as I was able to do with Carter.

If you know me, you know I love using technology, and I am incredibly grateful that technology has come easily for me, but I am so over this digital world which so many of us are now living in, and yet thankful it is available to us in staying connected with friends and loved ones. I’m even reading bedtime stories to the twins via Zoom at night . . . trying to find any way possible to stay close.

There have been silver-linings in this challenging year and I am exceedingly aware of all we have to be grateful for. #1 our health and the health of our family and friends. Robert and I have both been able to work through these last 10 months. Of course, I’m working virtually in my Zoom world. After sheltering in place for 5 weeks, Robert was able to return to work, painting SF Victorians. Our hearts and prayers go out to so many who have been less fortunate, in health and livelihood. We also have had each other, and have marveled how, instead of becoming tired of each other while spending so much time with just the two of us, we’ve become closer, enjoying each other’s company and depending on each other in ways we have not had to before. Again, with a heightened awareness that others continue to experience isolation in trying to stay safe and healthy while contributing to the stop of the spread. Hang in there everybody . . . . we see a light at the end of this tunnel!

So, as we bring in 2021 and share our annual New Year blog, check out Grammy’s Brag Book below, with our forever growing grandchildren- all 10 of them! Justin (29), Hailey (16), Logan (14), Paige (13), RJ (11), Carter (10), Dylan (9), Siena (5), Gemma (5), and Addy (2).

We wish you all happiness, health, and a very happy new year to come.

With Joy and Hope,
Pam and Robert
